A company in constant expansion

Delmar International, a Lachine-based company, has been a fixture on the Montreal scene since 1965, and has expanded over the years to become a major international presence. The company, founded by Harrison Cutler in 1965 through a merger with his own firm, initially focused on customs brokerage. In the 1980s the firm expanded its services into freight forwarding.

Delmar’s first location was in the Dominion Square building downtown. The company then operated from two Old Montreal locations before moving to its current headquarters in Lachine.

“And now, we’re a full logistics provider,” says Mathieu Darche, Vice President for Sales and Marketing. “We have offices in Canada, seven offices in the United States, offices in Mexico, Brazil, 10 offices in China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines. In Asia alone, we have 450 employees. We have 1,400 employees in total, and more than 45 offices.”

Darche says the company’s success can be attributed to “good strategic planning and strong people.”

The company is now run by the second generation of the family — Robert and Paul Cutler, as well as Michael Wagen, who has been with the company since 1978. And the future looks bright.

“We’re coming up with offices in the Indian subcontinent — India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and we’re just going to continue growing,” says Darche. “We were called a non-asset company, which means we’re a broker in everything we do, but now we started getting into assets. We purchased a company last year called Islandwide Logistics, and we rebranded it Delmar Logistics — it operates in the warehousing and distribution sector.”

Delmar International now has warehouse space of 250,000 square feet in Mississauga, Ontario, 240,000 square feet in Calgary and is presently looking at buildings in Montreal. The company also has warehouses in Champlain, New York, one in Los Angeles, and one in Miami, having made major investments in the U.S. over the last couple of years.

“Delmar is very proud to be privately owned and Montreal-based. We are one of the biggest privately owned Canadian forwarders,” says Darche. “
